Jowar flakes Chivda

This recipe creates a delicious and flavorful chivda, a savory snack mix, using jowar flakes.

Ingredients:

  • Masala (Spice Mix):
    • 1 ½ tsp Red Chili Powder
    • ½ tsp Turmeric Powder
    • 2 tsp Coriander Powder
    • ½ tsp Amchur Powder (Dry Mango Powder)
    • ½ tsp Cumin Powder
    • 2 tsp Powdered Sugar
    • 1 ½ tsp Salt
  • Chivda:
    • 150 gm All Sow Great Jowar Flakes
    • 2-3 tbsp Masala (from the recipe above)
    • 1 small cup Dry Coconut Slices
    • 1 small cup Peanuts
    • 1 small cup Curry Leaves
    • 1 small cup Fresh Coriander Leaves, chopped (optional)
    • 1 small cup Split Chana Dal
    • Oil for Frying

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Masala: In a bowl, combine all the masala ingredients: red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, amchur powder, cumin powder, powdered sugar, and salt. Mix well to create a uniform spice mix.

  2. Fry the Jowar Flakes: Heat enough oil in a large pan or wok for deep frying. Once the oil reaches medium heat (around 350°F), carefully add the jowar flakes in batches. Fry them until they turn golden brown and crispy. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan or overcook the flakes. Remove the fried flakes with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.

  3. Cool the Flakes: Let the fried jowar flakes cool completely in a separate bowl.

  4. Fry Other Ingredients: Reduce the heat slightly and keep about 3-4 tablespoons of oil in the pan. Add the peanuts, dry coconut slices, curry leaves, and split chana dal. Fry them individually or in batches until golden brown and crisp. Remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels along with the fried flakes.

  5. Assemble the Chivda: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooled fried jowar flakes, peanuts, coconut slices, curry leaves, and chana dal.

  6. Add Masala and Mix: Sprinkle the prepared masala (spice mix) over the chivda mixture. Use a light hand to gently fold and mix everything together until the masala is evenly distributed. Be careful not to crush the crispy flakes.

  7. Fresh Touch (Optional): If using fresh coriander leaves, add them to the chivda mixture and toss gently to combine.

  8. Enjoy! Your delicious Jowar Flakes Chivda is ready to serve. Enjoy it as a snack or store it in an airtight container for later.

Tips:

  • Adjust the amount of red chili powder in the masala to your spice preference.
  • You can substitute roasted peanuts for fried peanuts if desired.
